FAQs

You should book your first appointment as soon as you find out you're pregnant, ideally around 6–8 weeks gestation. This early visit allows your GP to confirm the pregnancy, discuss your health history, and start planning your antenatal care. It’s also a good time to ask questions and begin taking recommended supplements like folic acid.

Antenatal check-ups include monitoring your baby’s development and checking your health throughout pregnancy. These appointments often include blood pressure checks, blood tests, urine tests, and referrals for ultrasounds. Your GP will also discuss nutrition, lifestyle, and what to expect in each trimester.

Yes, many women choose to see their GP for ongoing pregnancy care through a model called shared maternity care. This means your GP manages your routine check-ups while working alongside hospital midwives or obstetricians. It offers continuity and convenience, especially if you already have a trusted relationship with your GP.

Shared maternity care is a collaborative approach where your GP and the hospital team share responsibility for your antenatal care. Your GP handles most of your visits, while key milestones or complications are managed with hospital input. It’s a great option for low-risk pregnancies and allows you to receive care closer to home.

Folic acid is the most important supplement to start before conception and continue through early pregnancy to help prevent neural tube defects. Other common supplements include iodine, iron, and vitamin D, depending on your individual needs. Your doctor can advise the best options based on your health and diet.
